Kindergarten Patriot Program Activities

COLOR THE FLAG

The students will correctly color the United States Flag.  The flag to be colored is attached.  Once the flag is colored, cut it out and attach it to a piece of construction paper.  Decorate the entire area around the flag to show service to others.  For example, raking the leaves.  You can use stickers, words, crayons, drawings, etc.  Just be creative!

CREATE A COLLAGE OR DIORAMA OF PATRIOTIC SYMBOLS

The collage should be on a piece of construction paper.  Pictures can be from the internet, magazines, etc.  Examples of symbols are national monuments, the White House, Mount Rushmore, the bald eagle, the flag, the Liberty Bell, etc.  Pictures are to be labeled.

WRITE A LETTER SHOWING APPRECIATION TO A SOLDIER OR FIRST RESPONDER (POLICE OFFICER, FIREFIGHTER, OR EMS)

The children are to write a letter to a soldier or a first responder currently serving our country.  The letter should show appreciation for their service.  Pictures can be drawn to decorate the letter.   Please make a copy of the letter and send it to school verifying the requirement was fulfilled.  If you get a response from your letter and would like to share it, please bring it to the Patriot Committee. WHERE DO I LIVE?

Draw or take a photograph of a landmark in your community.  Include your town, county, and country. * In addition, write a paragraph explaining why you are proud to live in the United States of America.

Second Grade Patriot Program Activities

UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THE DESIGN OF THE FLAG & FLAG ETIQUETTE **(see attached)

* The children should convey their knowledge of the meaning behind the flag’s design.  They need to explain what the colors represent, as well as the stars and stripes.

* The children must include two pictures that demonstrate flag etiquette. These pictures should be drawn or pasted on construction paper.  Each of the two pictures should be labeled noting the flag etiquette that is being demonstrated. Pictures may be hand-drawn or photographs from the internet or a magazine.

Pick a patriotic symbol to illustrate or model.  Label each part.  Write a brief paragraph explaining why the symbol is important to the United States. (Examples: Diorama, poster, clay model…)

RESEARCH INFORMATION ABOUT COUNTIES IN MASSACHUSETTS

Students will select five Massachusetts towns or cities.  For each, students will: state the name of the town or city, what county the town or city is in, the origin of its name, and two-three sentences including interesting facts about each. Also, identify their location in Massachusetts.

WHAT DOES THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE MEAN TO YOU?

Explain what the Pledge of Allegiance means to you in paragraph form.  Incorporate its history and impact on our country.  Be sure to use your best writing practices.

SING or RECITE THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER

Memorize the words to “The Star-Spangled Banner”, our national anthem.  The students will recite or sing the first verse of the song.  A copy of the anthem is attached.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT

We are asking the third-grade students to “pay it forward” by helping in a community activity.  This service must be completed by YOU.  Your time and effort put forth must be explained and justified in a neatly written or typed paragraph.  Explain what you did and how it made you feel.  How did your service help the community? The community service could be anything from donating to a local agency, spending time in a nearby senior center, or helping a neighbor in need.  Attach your paragraph to the Community Service form attached.

Draw the Massachusetts state seal, Plymouth County seal, or the Pembroke town seal.  Explain the symbolism in your own words.

RESEARCH GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS

Create a booklet containing the following government officials: U.S. President, U.S. Vice President, Massachusetts Governor, and the Plymouth County Executive.  Include a picture along with a description of their duties (include at least two duties per official).

LABEL THE STATES ON A MAP

The fourth-grade students will be responsible for knowing the location of the 50 states. The requirement is fulfilled by labeling a blank map in the student's handwriting. Parents may also quiz students by pointing to random states on the map. Students must be able to verbally name each state.

EXPLAIN OUR SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT

In at least one paragraph, the students need to explain what the 3 branches of government are and the responsibility of each branch to our country.  In another paragraph, please explain which branch of the government you would choose to work if you had the opportunity and why you chose that branch.  *Be sure to use your best writing practices.*

EXPLAIN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

Prepare a report to share with others explaining the purpose of the Declaration of Independence.  Include who from Massachusetts signed the document.  What impact does the Declaration of Independence have on us today?  Be sure to use your best writing practices.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT

RESEARCH AND MAKE A POSTER OR WRITE A REPORT ON A MASSACHUSETTS HISTORIC SITE.

Select a historic site in Massachusetts and write a report or create a poster giving bat least ten facts about the site. (Examples: Mayflower, Old North Church, Bunker Hill Monument, Old Ironsides, Castle William, State Capital Building or any other site you would like to investigate.)

CREATE AN ORIGINAL NEW ENGLAND FLAG.

Make sure that all six states are represented on your flag.  Explain the symbolism. (Examples: writing, poetry, rap or song)

Fifth Grade Patriot Program

LABEL ALL THE STATES & CAPITALS ON A MAP

The fifth-grade students will be responsible for knowing the location of the 50 states and their capitals.  This can be broken down into regions per the attached.  The requirement is fulfilled by labeling a blank map or pointing to the states and verbally naming each state and capital with a volunteer.

PRESIDENTIAL REPORT

Research a U.S. President that you are not familiar with (Donald Trump, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Barack Obama are not appropriate choices).  Then choose one of the following to share your information.

Choice 1: Baseball Card – Create a “baseball card” using an index card that includes the following information:

On the front: Picture of President

On the back: President’s name, Dates of birth and death, Years of Presidential term, Political Party, 2 interesting or important facts about this person.

Choice 2: Create a bio-cube for this president (see attached planning sheets).

CREATE A TIMELINE OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR PERIOD

Your timeline should include at least 10 significant events from the Revolutionary War period.  Each event needs to have a brief description of the event and include why this event was important to the time period. The timeline can be presented on a poster or digitally.  Below are a few interactive timelines which may be useful in completing this requirement:

IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS VOCABULARY CHALLENGE

Memorize the significance and details of eight historical documents important to our country.  Be prepared to write the details of the testing day.  A historical document practice sheet and study guide are provided.

CREATE A PICTORIAL REPRESENTATION OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS

MASSACHUSETTS ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVE RESEARCH

Research a current environmental initiative in Massachusetts and create a way to inform the public (poster, pamphlet, Public Service Announcement, collage, song…).

DEMONSTRATE “HOW TO BE A GOOD CITIZEN”

Write a story or create a picture book for a 1^st or 2^nd grader that illustrates “How to Be a Good Citizen”.  Some examples of qualities of a good citizen that may be included in the story or picture book are Responsibility, Self-Esteem, Friendship, Respect, Caring, Independence, Honesty, Loyalty, and/or Pride. 

REFLECT ON PATRIOTISM

Write a short essay that reflects upon how you can continue to be an active citizen at the school, town, state and/or national level.  Discuss how you will continue to positively impact the community you are such an important part of.
