Pembroke High School Weekly Update

Dear PHS Students and Families,
Here is this week's update.  As always, please don't hesitate to see me with any questions on these or any other matters.
As Superintendent Obey noted earlier this week, the district has begun the process of ascertaining if any of our schools are approaching the 80% vaccination status required to petition the Commissioner of Education as well as local officials for an exemption to the mask mandate.  Please click on the link above to learn how that process is unfolding for our districts, understand the level of confidentiality involved, and access the attestation form that parents can submit to - once again - confidentially indicate their child's vaccination status.
This Tuesday, October 26, all sophomores and juniors will be taking the PSATs from 7:30-11:01 a.m. (Periods 1-4). All testing information, including testing room locations, has been sent to student emails, so please remind your children to check their school email accounts.
Among other things, the email instructs students to report directly to their testing rooms once the 7:20 a.m. bell rings, or if they arrive after that time, to report to their testing room as soon as they arrive.  Our proctors will begin reading the test administration instructions shortly after our Pledge of Allegiance (and any other morning announcements), so it is imperative that our students arrive at school on time.  Once the proctors have finished reading the preliminary instructions and testing has begun, we cannot allow students to enter the testing room.  We anticipate this happening no later than 7:40 a.m.
Students should bring #2 pencils and calculators that have been approved by The College Board.  We do not have enough of these calculators to give to every student, and while the test can be taken without a calculator, using one will make testing more efficient for students.
Testing will conclude prior to our lunch block, so students will go about their day as usual beginning with P5.  This will allow them to eat lunch as scheduled.  For students with an extra-time accommodation, testing should conclude by 12:15 p.m.  Our cafeteria staff will have lunches available for these students so that all students will have a complete lunch, regardless of when they finish testing.
Best of luck to our juniors and sophomores!  Students and parents can contact Ms. Kelley, our PSAT testing coordinator, with any questions or concerns.
Notification letters will be sent home this weekend via regular mail to the 68 students (and their families) that submitted NHS eligibility packets, so those letters should be arriving home early next week. Those students that have been selected for membership will be celebrated at our annual NHS Induction Ceremony on Thursday, November 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Patricia Randall Auditorium. Best of luck to all of our candidates.
The Pick-a-Time portal to sign up for this Wednesday's parent/teacher conferences is now open.  This round of conferences is from 1-6 p.m. (Wednesday is an ERD for our students, with dismissal at 11:10 a.m. so that our teachers will be available to meet with parents).
When you log in to Pick-a-Time, you will have the option to select an in-person or a virtual conference.  Should you select an in-person conference, you will be given the teachers' room numbers; should you select a virtual conference, you will be given the links to join the teachers' Google Meets.  You do not need to log in with your child's Chromebook or your child's Google account to attend a Google Meet; however, to ensure the privacy of all participants, you will have to be "let into" the Google Meet by the teacher.  This will prevent parents from joining an ongoing conference.  We appreciate your patience as our teachers finish up one conference before allowing parents to join another.  Our teachers know how important it is that conferences run on time, so we do not expect there to be delays joining your conference, but if there are, they should be minimal.
Please consider supporting the Class of 2022 by partaking in this unique fundraising opportunity. On November 6 and 7, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Herring Run, the Senior Class is hosting mini-photo sessions, with each session lasting for 20-minutes.  For $60, your 20-minute session will produce 4-6 digital images guaranteed, with 60% of the proceeds going to the Class of 2022.  The best part is that the photographers are PHS alumnae Sophia Antoniotti ('20) and Christina Hickey ('18).
The attached flyer has all of the information that you need, including details to schedule your mini-photo session.  Our seniors have been working hard this year, trying to make up for fundraising opportunities taken away by the pandemic.  They have had two very successful ones already this year, and we thank you for any consideration you may have for taking advantage of this offer.  It could make for a terrific holiday family photo, among many other things!
This past Thursday, October 21, our English Department held a College Essay Workshop during Titan Time.  Students brought drafts of their essays to the English Wing, where they were able to move from room to room, individually conferencing with our English teachers, getting valuable feedback before submitting their finished projects.  The English Department will be running two more workshops on October 28 and November 4.  Please encourage your child to speak to his or her English teacher to get scheduled into one of those two remaining workshops.
Just a reminder that our school picture retakes have been rescheduled for next Friday, October 29.  We have not yet received our original portraits back from Legacy Studios, be we are anticipating them being her early next week.
