Sad News from Pembroke Public Schools

Dear Pembroke Families and Staff,

It is with a heavy heart that I write this correspondence. Our entire school community is shocked and saddened to learn that one of our former principals, David Summergrad, has passed away unexpectedly.

Mr. Summergrad served as principal at two of our elementary schools, and he was a revered colleague and friend to all of us in Pembroke. As an educator for over 40 years, he dedicated his professional life to his students and staff. David came out of retirement not once but twice to lead both North Pembroke and Hobomock Elementary School as principal. His impact on our community and our school culture in the years he worked with us is immeasurable.  He was a strong believer in the importance of connection and was dedicated to building strong relationships with the families and staff that he served. He was known for his ability to find solutions, unify people, and inspire constructive discussion. His belief in following a simple code of responsibility as both an educator and student are ideals we still operate under to this day. His passing is an immeasurable loss for all of us. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family, friends, colleagues, and students.

Counselors are available in all of our schools to support our students, staff, and any members of our school community during this difficult time. If you know of any child or adult, that may need support – call us. We are here to help.

At this time, we do not have any information regarding arrangements. If information becomes available that warrants sharing, that will be done at the appropriate time. For now, we are focused on the comfort and healing of our school community and to be a source of support for Mr. Summergrad’s family and friends.

Respectfully,

Erin Obey

Superintendent
