PHS Advanced Placement Update

Dear Advanced Placement (AP) Students & Families,

As you may know, on March 20, 2020, the College Board, the organization which administers the Advanced Placement (AP) Exams, communicated to students and schools that they would not be providing the traditional face-to-face paper-based exams. This testing change is due to the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Instead, for most AP courses, students will take a 45-minute online exam at home.  To accommodate this shorter testing window, the College Board has shortened the content assessed on each subject test to mitigate the loss of instructional time.  These exams will be administered from May 11-22, with the schedule of those exams found here.   Other courses, such as AP Art and Design:2D and AP Computer Science Principles, are submission-based and, therefore, will not have an online exam component.  Instead, submissions for those courses are due by 11:59 p.m. EST on May 26, 2020.  In all cases, your child’s teacher(s) has been sharing important testing information with all students.  The College Board also communicates directly with students through their online accounts. 

The College Board website will be particularly helpful to all students and families as we all prepare for this significant shift. For instance, important testing requirements and student expectations can be found here.   All students and families should review this important information.  Special attention should be paid to the College Board’s position on test integrity and academic honesty during these “at home” exams.  Furthermore,  free remote learning resources, including online review classes, are also available.

We do realize that this modified testing structure and shortened window of time to cover the curriculum standards create an adverse learning environment for our students.  In response, the College Board is allowing any student to opt-out of testing and receive a full refund.  In that same spirit, PHS has also decided to waive its requirement that all students sit for the AP exam in order to get the AP designation of their transcript.  Students wishing to opt-out must still successfully complete the course to get the designation, but we will not hold it against students wishing to opt-out of the exam.   Students/families wishing to opt-out should communicate that request to Mrs. Robin Conathan, guidance counselor and AP Coordinator (robin.conathan@pembrokek12.org) no later than April 17, 2020.   

I appreciate everyone’s patience during these very unique and unprecedented circumstances.  While the standards of the Advanced Placement assessment will be modified this year, I am confident the academic experience each student has had with our dedicated teachers throughout the year is what defines the success of our Advanced Placement Program.  Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
