Dear Pembroke Families & Staff:

As you may have seen, a horrific school shooting occurred yesterday in Uvalde, Texas. We know that events like what happened yesterday at Robb Elementary School are not only tragic and painful, but they can often lead to anxiety and fear felt by our entire school community. We understand our students and staff may need additional support during this time. We want to reinforce that we have support services in place and available to those who may be struggling with yesterday’s horrible event. Don’t hesitate to contact your child’s trusted school or guidance counselor if you or someone you know needs support.

Today, many of our students and staff will likely want to discuss this tragedy, share their emotions, and feel the support of a caring community. As we always do following these events, we will strive to meet students where they are and engage them on their terms in developmentally appropriate ways. The National Association of School Psychologists has some valuable resources on talking to children about violence that I encourage us all to review.  

Our greatest strength as a community is in the relationships we build with our students and families. A critical component of those relationships is honest communication between us.  More now than ever, the practice of, “see something, say something” is essential to the overall well being of our students and staff as we support each other.

Please know that the safety of our students, staff, and faculty is our number one priority in the Pembroke Public Schools. Counselors, social workers, and psychologists are available in our schools to support students, staff, and parents/guardians. Do not hesitate to reach out to any member of our school community, including our administrative team, if we can help support you.
