COVID-19 Update: March 16, 2020

March 16, 2020

Dear Pembroke Families, Students & Staff,

I wanted to take a moment to update you on our plans for the next few weeks.  As many of you heard last night, the Governor has required all schools to remain closed through at least Monday, April 6th.  Many stakeholders have been working hard over the past few days to get these plans in place, but we all have to be patient and flexible, as these plans could change on an hourly, daily or weekly basis.

School Building Access

All schools are closed, and there will be no public access to our five school buildings starting Tuesday, March 17th through Monday, April 6th.  We encourage you to call into the main office or email your building principal if you have specific questions or concerns, and they will get back to you in a timely fashion.  School offices, though not open to the public, will be staffed so families can call in over the next few weeks with any questions they may have.

Food Services

There have been a number of questions about whether food will be available to students who rely on their school’s breakfast and lunch programs. Starting Tuesday, March 17th, we will be offering a grab and go meal system at both Hobomock and North Pembroke Elementary Schools.  Families from any of our schools my access the meals at either of these locations between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.  There will be tables set up by the doors to each of these cafeterias so that families can just truly grab and go. The meals will consist of lunch for that day and breakfast for the next morning.  We will continue this program through this week and then reevaluate if we need to open additional sites, extend hours, etc. for the following week. We are also working with the Firehouse Food Pantry to offer support outside of our grab and go hours.

Maintenance Staff

The custodians have been doing amazing work over the past few days to clean and sanitize all of the district’s buildings.  They have been going over every inch of their buildings and making sure all areas are disinfected. The custodians and maintenance team will continue to enhance their disinfecting strategies and will be doing additional work during the closure.

Childcare

Both the YMCA and Pembroke Rec. Center have been in communication with their families around childcare offerings and options over the next few weeks.  Please direct any questions to those respective groups.

 Academic Enrichment

We understand that families are interested in maintaining some sense of routine and normalcy during this challenging time. Our teachers and staff have been compiling a list of online learning resources. These resources are enrichment opportunities and are not required nor intended to be assessed by teachers.  Students will not be graded on any of this work and there is no expectation of completion, our goal is to provide families with options as learning continues over the break.

Special Education

Upon the conclusion of the closure, and the re-opening of the district, as needed special education teams, will make individual team-based decisions regarding the rescheduling of any meetings that were set during the closure, address any timelines that need to be adjusted and review student progress.  We encourage you to review the enrichment activities and resources made available by the district for your child.  For more specific information, please see the guidance put out by the Department of Education that clarifies the roles of districts during this closure.

I know that many families still have questions: What about Camp Bournedale?  What about the prom?  Will graduation still be 6/6?  At this time, we cannot predict all of the changes we may have to make in the next few days, weeks or months.  As noted before, we all need to be patient and flexible when it comes to possible changes to the calendar. I will do all I can to communicate any new information as I get it.

Thank you all again, for your patience and support during this unprecedented time, we will continue to update you as new information becomes available.

Thanks,

Erin Obey
