Directors Note:

The Music Man is the very definition of a classic Broadway musical. Opening in 1957 and winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, it has been revived again and again, including a production set to open in the fall of 2020 with Hugh Jackman. Most audience members will have some level of familiarity with this show whether it be through one of the movie adaptations, having acted in their own high school production (that was my experience), or having heard one of the songs at some point, most likely 76 Trombones.
Set in Iowa in 1912, the story revolves around con man Harold Hill and his plan to swindle River City citizens out of their money by promising to turn their children into a band. Town librarian, Marian Paroo, among others, find his promises suspect and shenanigans ensue. A big, fun show with a large supporting cast and energetic ensemble musical numbers, The Music Man is a feel-good story with simple, universal themes. While some of the references may seem dated now, some are timeless: Marian eventually recognizes the genuine good that comes out of Harold’s scheme and sees the change that can come over a community when they work together with excitement towards a common goal. The way this is reflected by the students in our cast as they have worked hard together on this show is (wonderfully) obvious. The power of music is a remarkable thing, especially when it’s made together. Enjoy the show!
