World Language Field Trips
Students in Spanish IVH study Frida Kahlo as part of their unit on “Personal and Public Identities”.
Students in French IVH study Impressionist paintings as part of their unit on “Beauty and Esthetics (Le Beau)”. Throughout the unit, students become familiar with a number of painters and their work by reading, listening, and discussing their particular style of painting as a window into late nineteen-century French culture and history. At the end of the unit, students use three sources (one visual and one written text, and one audio recording) to write an argumentative essay about an impressionist painting of their choice.
This field trip to the MFA mirrors what students learned in the classroom and allows them the opportunity to see many Impressionist masterpieces up close. Students complete a treasure hunt activity focusing on specific paintings from the collection and compare them with the classical style of painting. We believe this treasure hunt helps our students to answer the overarching question of this unit on how our concept of beauty changes with time and social-historical influences.
