Studies show that access to books during the summer prevents a drastic loss in reading skills. Research shows that most children lose 2-3 months of learning over the summer. We recommend 10-30 minutes of reading per day at the K-6 Level.

Beyond the Beaten Path Reading Challenge with the Pembroke Public Library

  • 2022 Kids' Summer Reading Challenge
    Jun 21, 2022 - Aug 19, 2022

    Description
☀️ Summer Reading this year challenges you to "Read Beyond the Beaten Path" and explore the world through the adventures waiting for you in books and at your library. Read on to discover how you can make the most of your summer.

📚 Kids can read and earn beads to decorate their very own necklace! When you read, you can choose anything. Your book can be about animals, rock climbing, robots, or pancakes. You can read by yourself, out loud to another person, or listen to someone else read to you. You can also listen to an audio book or read a magazine, graphic novel, or how-to book. The possibilities are endless! The most important thing is that you read something you enjoy.

🌳 Unlock two bonus badges by completing outdoor or indoor activities and reading new books. Find out more about these by selecting the "Badges" tab under your 2022 Summer Reading Challenge.

    FAQ

    How do the beads work?
Kids read and record their minutes (or have a grown-up help them track time), then they visit the library to turn those minutes into beads of varying colors, shapes, and designs to decorate and personalize their very own necklace. Don't have your necklace and brag tag yet? Be sure to visit the library to pick yours out!

What do I need to read for school?
All Pembroke Public School students may visit the school Summer Learning Page for elementary, middle, and high school required reading and suggested resources, activities, and links to engage children and teens in math and reading throughout the summer.

How do I log my books?
Click the green "Log Reading and Activities" button in the top left-hand corner of this site. You can even tell us what you thought of a book by selecting the "Write Reviews" button instead! If you'd like a paper log, you can visit the library or download and print 🖶 a page (or more) from our site.

Where can I see the books I've logged?
At the top of this page select "Reading Log" to view your books and/or time logged.
